Learning Objectives

The aim of this two day course is to provide an introduction to the most important aspects of osteopathic care in the context of the neonatal unit. By the end of the course, the osteopath should:

Understand the role of touch in the neonatal unit, the perception of pain in premature infants and different ways of holding and contacting a baby in an incubator or open cot. Conscious use and calibration of touch in osteopathic palpation.

Appreciate the importance of neonatal transition of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and the medical support that is given in the neonatal unit and how an osteopath might contribute to the care of infants under ventilatory or oxygen support.

Know the different causes of neonatal jaundice and treatment approaches

Be conversant with the common neurological findings on a cranial ultrasound scan in preterm babies and the clinical implications of such findings and the prognosis.

Understand the normal contraindications to osteopathic treatment in this context.

Be aware of the stress signals in a preterm baby and to know how to proceed with examination and treatment. To appreciate the baby in the context of the family unit.

Have an appreciation of the challenges of osteopathic diagnosis and treatment in relation to premature infants.
